Remember how we talked about the fact that my mom doesn’t like apple pie, and that she did like raspberry pie so it always got the happy face? Well, I think I could change her mind with this pie. In fact I believe this dutch apple pie with white chocolate butter sauce is the pie that all apple pie lovers and haters will go gaga over. After I created this pumpkin pasta with Fisher nuts I hurried and wrote them that I had an idea for my next post and that it involved pie. Clearly we all voted yes on posting it.

I think the biggest problem people have with a classic apple pie is that they don’t enjoy the mushy fruit. At least, that’s the most common thing that I hear.
But these apples are different.
You’ll start your apple pie by cooking the apples for about 10-15 minutes in a sauce pan over medium heat until they just start to turn tender. Not already tender, but just starting to soften and then they head straight into the pie.

How to Avoid a Runny Apple Pie
Some recipes call for cooking the pie low and slow until the apples break down, but I don’t love how much juice comes out that way. Other recipes call for pre cooking the apples until completely tender and cooked and then baking the pie on a higher heat. I actually don’t mind that method, but because the apple pie with tender but still firm apples seems to be the one winning over our friends and family members that don’t like apple pie I think I’ll stick with this one.

Ingredients for Dutch Apple Pie
For the Crust and Apple Pie Filling
- Pie Crust: all purpose flour, unsalted butter, salt, sugar, and ice water
- Apples: I prefer a combination of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples when I make apple pie.
- Sugar: adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the apples
- Flour: helps thicken the juices that cook off the apples
- Spices: Nutmeg and Cinnamon
- Salt: enhances all the flavors

For the Topping
- Flour: just regular all purpose flour works great
- Pecans: adds a great warmth and flavor to the topping, plus a little extra crunch, but you can’t even tell what it is. Your guests will totally be guessing at what you added to give the topping that little somethin’ somethin’ but never know it’s just a bunch of pecans from Fisher Nuts.
- PRO TIP: If you aren’t a pecan fan, walnuts can be used instead.
- Rolled Oats: adds texture and structure to the topping
- Brown Sugar: adds rich flavor and sweetness
- Salt: enhances all the flavors
- Butter: binds all the ingredients together to form the crunchy rich topping
For the White Chocolate Butter Sauce
- Butter: adds richness and is the base for the sauce, make sure it’s cold butter
- Powdered Sugar: sweetens the sauce
- Cream Cheese: make sure it is room temperature so it doesn’t get clumpy
- White Chocolate Melts: almond bark also works
The measurements for all the ingredients can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post. Keep scrolling down for all the details.

How to Make Dutch Apple Pie with White Chocolate Butter Sauce
I’m going to walk you through each step for making this outrageous apple pie. It’s so much easier than it looks because it looks so dang fancy. I’ll break it up into each of the different parts of the recipe.
For the Pie
- You’ll want to start preheating the oven and by making the pie crust. I won’t go into the details here since you can read all about it in that post. Roll out the pie dough using a rolling pin and place the bottom crust in a pie dish.
- Then you will cook the apples on the stove top just to tender them up a bit.
- When the apples have partially cooked, pour them into the pie crust and then add the oat topping all over the top (I’ll explain how to make that below).
- Bake the pie until golden brown and bubbling. While the pie is baking you can make the white chocolate sauce (explained below).
- Serve the pie warm with vanilla ice cream and the buttery white chocolate sauce.

For the Topping
- Combine all the ingredients except the butter in a small bowl and whisk everything together.
- Using a pastry cutter, cut in the butter and then use your hands to finish mixing. It should clump together when you squeeze it.
- PRO TIP: If you don’t have a pastry cutter, a fork works just fine too!
- Crumble the topping over the top of the apples.

For the Sauce
Do not make this sauce ahead of time. It’s best fresh. ๐
- Add all the ingredients except the white chocolate to a small bowl and use an electric hand mixer to beat everything together.
- When you are ready to serve, heat up the sauce mixture in one bowl and the white chocolate in another bowl.
- Once they are both heated quickly stir them together and serve over the hot pie.
All of these instructions can also be found in the recipe card down below.

What is the Difference Between Dutch Apple Pie and Regular?
Regular apple pie has a pastry top. Dutch apple pie is topped with streusel instead of pastry. It’s like a combination of an apple pie and and apple crumble or crisp. Heaven!

What are the Best Apples for Baking?
We used a combo of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith. I know, youโre used to being told to go straight to grannyโs, but trust me, the combination of the two gives the pie the perfect sweetness and flavor. Here are our favorite apples for baking:
- Granny Smith
- Honey Crisp
- Braeburn
- Macintosh
- Golden Delicious
- Ambrosia
- Gala
- Fuji

How Long Will Apple Pie Keep?
Apple pie will keep for 2-3 days at room temperature.
You can keep apple pie for an additional 2-3 days in the fridge.

Can You Freeze Apple Pie Before It is Baked?
Freezing apple pie before it is baked is the preferred method. It’s texture and flavor will be closer to fresh apple pie. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil and freeze up to 4 months in the freezer.
There is no need to thaw before baking. Place frozen pie on baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 35-40 minutes.

Dutch apple pie is one of my all time favorites! I mean, I’ve never come across a pie I didn’t like, but there’s some about those perfectly cooked apples with the crunchy oat topping that is out of this world! Then you add the white chocolate butter sauce and YOWZA!! You’re gonna be drooling over this one, friends!

Dulce De Leche Banana Cream Pie

Traditional Apple Pie

The cooking time seems really short. Should the pie crust be pre-baked before putting in the apples? It just says โmake the pie crustโ. I assume that means prepare it but donโt bake it because apple pie is usually done in an unbaked crust.
Hi Raena! The pie crust should still be raw before baking. The bake time is shorter than a usual apple pie because the apples are partially cooked before going into the pie crust. Step 3 in the instructions goes through that step. Enjoy!!
We do a lot of prepping beforehand. I’d love to make this pie and freeze it. Should I follow the recipe to step 4 on pie instructions, then pull out and follow the directions from the freezing apple pie instructions? Thanks so much!
Yes, exactly! Enjoy!
Oh my lanta!! I will be checking these out, thank you
You totally should! Let us know how it goes!!
Can I pour the glaze over the whole pie, or would it ruin it?
The topping would become soft under the glaze, but I don’t think it would be bad
Hi there! This pie looks A-MAZING! How well do you think this translates into an apple crisp? Could I just make it as is and ditch the pie crust? I’m hoping to make it for a birthday party coming up and was just thinking I could serve more people with it as a crisp…or is it that good as a pie and I should just make multiple? I need to feed about 15 people.
It would work fantastic as a crisp! And I’m dying that I never even thought of that, haha! I would double it for 15 people.
This pie looks AMAZING!!! Going to give it a test run for our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Unfortunately, I have pie crust anxiety, lol – do you think I could use a graham or other type of crust? Thank you for this fantastic recipe!
Oh totally!! Graham cracker crust is always good or often you can buy a crust from a bakery if you don’t want to buy frozen.
Thank you so much for your quick reply. My son is home from college this weekend so I’m going to give this lucious pie a go. Maybe when I’m feeling brave, I’ll try your foolproof crust. Looks heavenly. Thank you again!!
Wonderful!! I hope you all enjoy it!
Oh My Goodness – that was the best tasting apple pie EVER!!! Everyone raved about it…and the white chocolate butter sauce was over the top delicious!!! I made the pie yesterday…it’s completely gone!!!
Woohooo!!!! This totally makes my night. I know we adore it but it’s always so nice to hear that someone else does too. Thank you so much!!!!
i made this recipe this past winter.it turned out perfect!! Today…I cut the recipe in half to make a small pie….omg….terrible! I followed everything to the letter, went over it 12 times trying to figure out why? When applying the apples and dry ingredients to the pan, I was suspicious because there was no wet ingredients…kept the faith and continued….dry, cakey and huge disappointment ๐
